|
Acireale is a beautiful small town at about 10 km from Trecastagni, which has approximately 50.000 inhabitants. Its origins date back to 1300 circa and it’s situated on high ground close to the sea. It developed, and was made a Direct Royal Domain, and therefore its current name. Acireale is rich in architectural, artistic, and culturaltreasures. In the beautiful main square we find two churches side by side, the cathedral in romantic-gothic style was built between the 14th and 17th C. and contains a rich collection of fine art works, adjacent is the basilica of S. Peter & Paul in which may be found frescoes and sculptures of famous artists of that period. |

We wish to mention also the Pinacoteca Library Zelantea that contains more than 250.000 volumes and remarkable works of art. Acireale has been since ancient times a thermal spa town. There is a modern plant for the exploitation of sulphurous waters located in the proximity of the archaeological remains of an ancient thermal spa (The Greeks and then the Romans used the therapeutic properties). Today the waters are classified sulphurous radioactive, and the mud vegetable mineral. But Acireale is famous also for its Carnival that boasts traditions since 1700, today its parade of allegorical and flowered wagons are famous worldwide. It’s an event that attracts thousands of visitors. In order to close these short notes a mention has to be made of it’s markets, rich with products fresh from the countryside and the fresh fish, that is sold so rapidly that at the conclusion of the morning the stalls are desolately empty. Finally the antique confectionary tradition makes Acireale a town where its products and particularly the ice creams are unanimously appreciated. |
